It is the time of year where many make New Year’s resolutions. There is nothing wrong with setting a resolution. It gives you a goal to achieve. If we compare this to a road trip across the country, we have a set destination we wish to arrive at. Without a plan to get there or asking for directions one could wander in a whole different destination. You need a road map even if it is on your phone.
When setting resolutions, look at them from these viewpoints. Is it specific so that you know exactly what you want and what it would look like to be there? You also want to look at whether it is reasonable? Is it completely under your control? It is almost impossible to achieve a goal if part of it is not in your control and the uncontrolled part is not headed in the same direction as you are.
If your resolution involves a habit such as smoking for example, you need a replacement behavior. The brain doesn’t do well when we have a behavioral hole. If the old behavior is not replaced with a new behavior then you are likely to slip back into the bad habit.
Track your progress regularly. Look at your resolutions and see how far you are on your road-map. It helps if you have a trusted accountability partner. These two things will help when you begin to stray off your own map to somewhere you didn’t really want to go, such as back into a bad habit.
Reinforce a new habit with a healthy reward system. Bad habits have their reward such as comfort eating or feeling less tense after a cigarette. Your new habit needs a reward as well. Maybe it is a new outfit when you change to a lower size. Maybe it is a day at the spa. Whatever you choose, it should be healthy and worth working towards.
Most importantly, make a plan to get there. Let’s use lose twenty pounds. Your plan might include things like walk four days a week, eat smaller portions, weight in once a week (only once), eat healthier food choices etc. With these small steps, it is easier to see slips than a broad stroke of lose 20lbs.
If you need an accountability partner, I am offering such a service for the new year. For $25.00 a month, I will help you form your plan and then check in once a month and help with revisions, roadblocks or just plain encouragement. I can only do this for about 25 people so message me if you are interested in this service.
Have a happy New Year and may 2019 be one of achievement!
