Happiness encompasses a lot of other words and psychologists have been trying to pin it down for decades. It is a broad word that includes contentment, cheerfulness, joy, high spirits, well-being and more. Positive messages and fun memes will not in and of themselves create happiness. However, positive affirmations sure don’t hurt.
Research around the globe has found that most people rate happiness as more important than a meaningful life, becoming rich or even getting into heaven. They have even connected happy states such as feeling fulfilled and having a positive outlook to physical health. Feelings such as these seem to benefit blood pressure, the immune system and more. It has even been linked to a longer life span.
So how do you enter this state of being, feeling happy? We know that money can only contribute to happiness when it is meeting basic needs so there is no worry to make ends meet. After that, money can buy experiences. However, material items beyond have been shown not to necessarily contribute to happiness. Many people in the world of had a great deal of money and things and yet have not found happiness.
It has also been found that those that report being the “happiest”, have also reported times of great discomfort. So, do I have to be miserable to be happy? Again, research can not definitely answer this. What has been reported is that genetics, experiences, achievements and social relationships do influence happiness. Much of feeling happy is under our control.
Here are some things that will contribute to that state of happiness in your life. Regularly indulge in small pleasures, getting absorbed in activities or hobbies that bring you comfort, joy or fun. One of the things that has also been found to be a major factor in life satisfaction is the creating the right goals for yourself and then living in accordance with those goals.
What do I mean by accordance? Here is an example. Many people set a goal to lose weight. Yet when they go shopping, they buy things that would not support their weight loss plan. Then when a cravings hit… they don’t have to go far. It is just in the cupboard.
