There is a misconception about Inner Peace that impacts a lot of people. It is often thought that if you have inner peace than you are always passive, and life becomes pretty dull. This is not the truth, inner peace leaves you feeling alive and rejuvenated.
Here is how Wikipedia defines it:
"Inner peace (or peace of mind) refers to a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace, with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong in the face of discord or stress. Being 'at peace' is considered by many to be healthy and the opposite of being stressed or anxious."
I see it as a state where I am not fixated on the past, negative self-talk, or other people’s opinions. It is not something that you achieve and then live your life this way without stress or anxiety. It is a conscious process, so when things are going wrong, it is easy to slip back to frantic negative thinking.
Imagine for the moment that you are confined to a single room of your home. That room is full much like a hoarder. There is furniture, books, papers and junk everywhere. At first it would be very unpleasant. After a while, you would begin to get used to it. It becomes your state of normal. If you think about all the mess around you, you may not like but you also do nothing to change it.
That is how many people live inside their own head. I was once told by a mentor that the most dangerous streets you will ever walk is the ones in your mind and I believe it. Our conscious thoughts become crammed with fears, worries, negative thinking and self-talk. When your mind is occupied in this manner, there is no room for new or different thoughts. This means the individual begins to live in a state of tension and stress, frantically jumping from thought to though or fixating on a single situation at the risk of all others.
Inner Peace is the opposite of this. It is a state of calmness where you can remain more focused, mindful of what you are doing. It is a mental state of freedom. Think about the room above. If you took the time to empty and clean it, you would discover a great deal of space. You can then return to the room all the things that are actually of value and throw the junk and garbage away.
I love my moments of inner peace. Do I slip sometimes? Of course I do. You will too. It is making the conscious choice to resolve matters plaguing us so that we can return to that state of calm and happiness that is important. If you take this journey, you find that you are more focused, can think clearly, and you will find stress levels decrease dramatically.
That is what I am doing in my coaching business. I am helping people begin this journey by helping them empty “the room.” Can you do it on your own? Absolutely, in these days almost everything you want to know is online somewhere if you take the time to look. The advantage of a coach is having someone who has organized this information and will hold you accountable to actually implementing it.
I hope you have a great weekend.
